Squaw Cave is off of the Hop River Linear Trail Brainard Homestead State Park Creek Row (a dirt road off of Maple Avenue) East Haddam, CT Type: State Walk-in park Burr Pond State Park 384 Burr Mountain Road Torrington, CT Type: State Former site of world's first condensed milk factory (destroyed in 1877); Canoe & kayak rentals available Bushnell Park Capitol Avenue Hartford, CT Type: Urban Features fields, rare trees, a small pond, statues, the Memorial Arch, the Carousel, a view of the State Capitol building, the Corning Fountain, and the Performance Pavilion Campbell Falls State Park Reserve Spaulding Road Norfolk, CT Type: State Located in New Marlborough, MA and Norfolk, CT; The Whiting River falls nearly 100 feet at Campbell Falls in Massachusetts before it enters Connecticut; No facilities Chaffinch Island Park 205 Chaffinch Island Road Guilford, CT Type: Municipal This town park is a rocky outcropping on Guilford Harbor Chatfield Hollow State Park 381 Route 80 Killingworth, CT Type: State Status: Seasonal A nice state park featuring Schreeder Pond which has a beach for swimming (no lifeguards) and a bathroom building, a small nature center (open weekends only), many picnic tables and grills, 18 miles of trails, several small bridges, a long boardwalk over a swamp, a covered bridge reproduction, a restored non-working waterwheel, Indian caves, and old building foundations. Note: The caves are very small and the trail to them is steep and somewhat dangerous. Elizabeth Park 1561 Asylum Avenue West Hartford, CT Type: Urban A park famous for its 2.1 acre rose garden (800 varieties); also features, pathways, greenhouses, a picnic grove, a pond, recreation areas, and a cafe & banquet room (Pond House Cafe); Alternate entrance at 951 Prospect Ave, Hartford (41.77683, -72.71439) Elizabeth Park Sunrise Overlook 913 Prospect Ave Hartford, CT A small section of Elizabeth Park which overlooks Hartford; Elizabeth Park is across the street (in West Hartford) Enders State Forest 135 Barkhamsted Road (Route 219) Granby, CT Type: State, Forest Located in Granby and Barkhamsted; The attraction here are the waterfalls that can be viewed from downhill trails along the stream; Address approximate; Small parking lot along Route 219; Use extreme caution. There have been many medical emergencies here due to people falling (one died). Some people swim here, but it is not advised. Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park 57 Fort Street Groton, CT Type: State Status: Seasonal Site of Fort Griswold, where in 1781 the British (with Benedict Arnold) attacked and massacred the American defenders. A monument & small Revolutionary War museum (seasonal) now stand nearby, also the Ebenezer Avery House. Parking may be available along Monument St. or Park Ave. Fort Saybrook Monument Park 137 College Street (Route 154) Old Saybrook, CT Small historical area containing the remains of the former Fort Saybrook; Storyboards explain the history of Old Saybrook; Also wooded paths for walking Fort Trumbull State Park 90 Walbach Street New London, CT Type: State Features Fort Trumbull (built from 1839-1852); Offers a 500 foot long fishing pier, waterfront walk, tours of the fort, visitor center with interactive exhibits, bathrooms (year-round), conference center, salt-water fishing; Park open year-round; Visitor Center open from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day Gay City State Park 435 North Street (Route 85) Hebron, CT Type: State Status: Seasonal Was the site of a mill town until the mid-1800s; extensive trail system George Waldo State Park Purchase Brook Road Southbury, CT Type: State Undeveloped walk-in park; There's a trail to Lake Lillinonah Gillette Castle State Park 67 River Road (Route 82) East Haddam, CT Type: State Located along the Connecticut River; Featuring tours of the late stage actor William Gillette's castle-like home (admission fee); Park offers interesting trails and scenic views; Primitive river campsites for canoers only; Grounds are open year round Haddam Island Haddam, CT Type: State, Island Located in the Connecticut River; Access is by boat only Haddam Meadows State Park 804 Saybrook Road (Route 154) Haddam, CT Type: State Located along the Connecticut River; Offers boat access to the river and several picnic areas; Open year-round; No fees Haley Farm State Park Haley Farm Lane Groton, CT Type: State A former farm dating back to 1648; features a 0.8 mile bike trail Hammonasset Beach State Park 1288 Boston Post Road (Route 1) Madison, CT Type: State Connecticut's largest public beach covers 2 miles of shoreline on Long Island Sound; Large parking lot; 3 beach areas; Lifeguards in summer; Seasonal campground; Meigs Point Nature Center; Recent new buildings and boardwalks as of 2015 Harkness Memorial State Park 275 Great Neck Road Waterford, CT Type: State The 1906 Eolia Mansion and estate including many formal gardens; Mansion is open for tours weekends and holidays from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; Park open year-round Haystack Mountain State Park Route 272 Norfolk, CT Type: State Features a 34 foot high stone tower at the summit (with views from Long Island Sound to the Berkshires); A road goes halfway up the mountain then there is a half-mile trail to the peak (strenuous hiking); The road is closed in winter Hidden Valley Preserve 198 Bee Brook Road Washington, CT Type: Conservation Land A protected area in western Connecticut consisting of forest, wooded hillsides, and small meadows with 17 miles of trails.
