Note: The caves are very small and the trail to them is steep and somewhat dangerous. Gillette Castle State Park 67 River Road (Route 82) East Haddam, CT Type: State Located along the Connecticut River; Featuring tours of the late stage actor William Gillette's castle-like home (admission fee); Park offers interesting trails and scenic views; Primitive river campsites for canoers only; Grounds are open year round Hammonasset Beach State Park 1288 Boston Post Road (Route 1) Madison, CT Type: State Connecticut's largest public beach covers 2 miles of shoreline on Long Island Sound; Large parking lot; 3 beach areas; Lifeguards in summer; Seasonal campground; Meigs Point Nature Center; Recent new buildings and boardwalks as of 2015 Harkness Memorial State Park 275 Great Neck Road Waterford, CT Type: State The 1906 Eolia Mansion and estate including many formal gardens; Mansion is open for tours weekends and holidays from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; Park open year-round Kent Falls State Park 470 Kent Cornwall Road (Route 7) Kent, CT Type: State Features: Kent Falls (a series of waterfalls, main cascade is 70 feet), 1/4-mile stair trail up along the falls, other trails, covered bridge (1974 reproduction); Parking fees charged weekends & holidays Memorial Day to October 31; Address is approximate Kettletown State Park 1400 George's Hill Road Southbury, CT Type: State Located in Oxford & Southbury next to the Housatonic River; features manmade Lake Zoar and a 61 site campground (fees apply); Swimming no longer allowed; Alcohol prohibited; Pets not allowed Rocky Neck State Park 244 West Main Street (Route 156) East Lyme, CT Type: State A large hugely popular state park and beach on Long Island Sound with campgrounds (160 wooded and open sites) and picnic areas; Huge cobblestone Pavilion available for rent (capacity 425 people) Sherwood Island State Park Sherwood Island Connector Westport, CT Type: State Status: Seasonal Large beach and park located on Long Island Sound; Has a Nature Center (open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, seasonally); Alcohol not allowed; Pets not allowed April 15 to Sept 30; Water shoes recommended to swimmers. Sleeping Giant State Park 200 Mount Carmel Avenue Hamden, CT Type: State Features a stone lookout tower; quarry, 1.5 mile trail to the tower on the summit of Mt. Carmel, scenic vistas; The park is named for the mountain's appearance from a distance; Park was damaged by a tornado in 2018. Wadsworth Falls State Park 721 Wadsworth Street Middletown, CT Type: State Features a swimming area, a picnic area, trails, and a waterfall; To see the big waterfall it is easier to park in the Cherry Hill Road lot (41.52613, -72.69681) than to make the very long trek through the wooded trails Walnut Hill Park 184 West Main Street New Britain, CT Type: Municipal City of New Britain park designed in 1870 by the office of Frederick Law Olmsted Wickham Park 1329 Middle Turnpike West (Route 44) Manchester, CT Type: Urban Status: Seasonal Large park owned by a private foundation. The park is mostly in Manchester, but extends into East Hartford. Features gardens, open fields, woodlands, ponds, trails, picnic areas, sports facilities, playgrounds, an aviary (bird zoo), and a nature center. There is also a building and area used for weddings. Entrance fee charged per vehicle ($5 Mon-Fri, $7 Sat-Sun as of 2019). |
