Chatfield Hollow State Park

Status: Seasonal
A nice state park featuring Schreeder Pond which has a beach for swimming (no lifeguards) and a bathroom building, a small nature center (open weekends only), many picnic tables and grills, 18 miles of trails, several small bridges, a long boardwalk over a swamp, a covered bridge reproduction, a restored non-working waterwheel, Indian caves, and old building foundations. Note: The caves are very small and the trail to them is steep and somewhat dangerous.

The 1906 Eolia Mansion and estate including many formal gardens; Mansion is open for tours weekends and holidays from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; Park open year-round

Large beach and park located on Long Island Sound; Has a Nature Center (open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, seasonally); Alcohol not allowed; Pets not allowed April 15 to Sept 30; Water shoes recommended to swimmers.

Sleeping Giant State Park

Features a stone lookout tower; quarry, 1.5 mile trail to the tower on the summit of Mt. Carmel, scenic vistas; The park is named for the mountain's appearance from a distance; Park was damaged by a tornado in 2018.

Features a swimming area, a picnic area, trails, and a waterfall; To see the big waterfall it is easier to park in the Cherry Hill Road lot (41.52613, -72.69681) than to make the very long trek through the wooded trails

Wickham Park

Large park owned by a private foundation. The park is mostly in Manchester, but extends into East Hartford. Features gardens, open fields, woodlands, ponds, trails, picnic areas, sports facilities, playgrounds, an aviary (bird zoo), and a nature center. There is also a building and area used for weddings. Entrance fee charged per vehicle ($5 Mon-Fri, $7 Sat-Sun as of 2019).
