One of only three original covered bridges in Connecticut built for vehicular traffic; 110 feet long (80' span); crosses the Salmon River; built in 1873; pedestrian traffic only; located on the Colchester - East Hampton line

Dinosaur State Park and Arboretum

Over 500 dinosaur tracks on display in a geodesic dome building and related displays; a living arboretum of Mesozoic Era plants families, and nature trails; Open year-round; Park grounds are free, but the exhibit center charges a reasonable fee.

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

2.5 hour tour includes a steam locomotive ride from Essex Station to Deep River landing then a 1.25 hour riverboat ride on the Connecticut River aboard the Becky Thatcher, then a return ride on the steam train. Some tours offer a hike to Gillette Castle. Main entrance is off of Route 154 on Railroad Avenue, but main parking lot is on Plains Road (Route 153)

The Thread City Crossing Bridge has large statues of giant frogs sitting on top of spools of thread. Parking is available near First Baptist Church and the town green at (41.7116, -72.2106)

Groton Monument & Fort Griswold Battlefield

Site of Fort Griswold, where in 1781 the British (with Benedict Arnold) attacked and massacred the American defenders. A monument & small Revolutionary War museum (seasonal) now stand nearby, also the Ebenezer Avery House, picnic tables, portable toilets

Heublein Tower

165-foot-tall tower on top of Talcott Mountain; The tower and the house next to it (now a museum) were built in 1914 by Gilbert F. Heublein who was a magnate in the alcohol and food industries. The top of the tower offers views of up to 80 miles away. Seasonal tours are available Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm; Getting to the tower requires a 1.25 mile (40 minute) hike over Talcott Mountain

A group of attractions for both children and adults; Includes The Dinosaur Place (outdoor adventure with over 40 life-size dinosaurs), Discovery Depot (hands-on indoor activity center), The Shops (selling jewelry, gifts, toys, beads, minerals, and fossils), and The PAST Antiques Market and Museum; Admission fees apply to activities and exhibits such as The Dinosaur Place and Discovery Depot.

A 19th century metal truss bridge now used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Groups inspired by the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, MA place boxes of flowers on the bridge and have nearby community gardens. Entrance is free, but donations are accepted.

Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine

The first State Prison in America; Housed criminals and Revolutionary War prisoners from 1773 to 1827; Was originally used as a copper mine; Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976; Possibly haunted; Closed for restoration until 2014 or 2015

A dam and reservoir on the Farmington River which supplies drinking water to the city of Hartford; There are small parking areas on each side of the dam; People often stop here to enjoy the view

Wild Parrots in Connecticut

Wild parrots, actually Monk Parakeets from Brazil that escaped from JFK Airport in the 1960s have established colonies in the Bridgeport-Fairfield-Milford area; they are a nuisanse because they build huge nests, are very loud, & compete with native birds
