Total Tourist Attractions Found In Connecticut: 21Albino Squirrels Shelton, CT Type: Animals Bull's Bridge 248 Bull's Bridge Road (off of Route 7) Kent, CT Type: Covered Bridge One of only two covered bridges in Connecticut still used for vehicular traffic; 110 feet long (80' span); crosses the Housatonic River; Built in 1842; Small parking lot just before the bridge; Close to the Appalachian Trail and New York state border Chester-Hadlyme Ferry 165 Ferry Road (Route 148) Lyme, CT Type: Boat Status: Seasonal An operating ferry that conveys automobiles across the Connecticut River between Chester and Hadlyme; The original ferry service here begain in 1769; Actual trip takes 5 minutes; Fee is low; There is a small park next to the dock in Hadlyme Comstock Bridge Comstock Bridge Road (off Route 16) East Hampton, CT Type: Covered Bridge One of only three original covered bridges in Connecticut built for vehicular traffic; 110 feet long (80' span); crosses the Salmon River; built in 1873; pedestrian traffic only; located on the Colchester - East Hampton line Dinosaur State Park and Arboretum 400 West Street Rocky Hill, CT Type: Natural Wonder Over 500 dinosaur tracks on display in a geodesic dome building and related displays; a living arboretum of Mesozoic Era plants families, and nature trails; Open year-round; Park grounds are free, but the exhibit center charges a reasonable fee. Essex Steam Train and Riverboat 1 Railroad Avenue (off Route 9) Essex, CT Type: Tours Status: Seasonal 2.5 hour tour includes a steam locomotive ride from Essex Station to Deep River landing then a 1.25 hour riverboat ride on the Connecticut River aboard the Becky Thatcher, then a return ride on the steam train. Some tours offer a hike to Gillette Castle. Main entrance is off of Route 154 on Railroad Avenue, but main parking lot is on Plains Road (Route 153) Frog Bridge South Street Windham, CT Type: Roadside Oddity The Thread City Crossing Bridge has large statues of giant frogs sitting on top of spools of thread. Parking is available near First Baptist Church and the town green at (41.7116, -72.2106) Groton Monument & Fort Griswold Battlefield 57 Fort Street Groton, CT Type: Historical Site of Fort Griswold, where in 1781 the British (with Benedict Arnold) attacked and massacred the American defenders. A monument & small Revolutionary War museum (seasonal) now stand nearby, also the Ebenezer Avery House, picnic tables, portable toilets Heublein Tower Route 185 Simsbury, CT Type: Building Status: Seasonal 165-foot-tall tower on top of Talcott Mountain; The tower and the house next to it (now a museum) were built in 1914 by Gilbert F. Heublein who was a magnate in the alcohol and food industries. The top of the tower offers views of up to 80 miles away. Seasonal tours are available Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm; Getting to the tower requires a 1.25 mile (40 minute) hike over Talcott Mountain Huckleberry Hill Bridge Huckleberry Hill Road Avon, CT Type: Covered Bridge 35 feet long; built in 1968 over an outlet of a pond; foot traffic only Kent Falls Bridge 470 Kent Cornwall Road (Kent Falls State Park, Route 7) Kent, CT Type: Covered Bridge Small pedestrian covered bridge located in Kent Falls State Park; 37 feet long; built in 1974; crosses Kent Falls Brook; foot traffic only Kent Iron Furnace 31 Kent Cornwall Road (Route 7) Kent, CT Type: Historical Part of the Sloan Stanley Museum site; The Kent Iron Furnace was used to make iron in the 1800s Nature's Art Village 1650 Hartford-New London Turnpike Montville, CT A group of attractions for both children and adults; Includes The Dinosaur Place (outdoor adventure with over 40 life-size dinosaurs), Discovery Depot (hands-on indoor activity center), The Shops (selling jewelry, gifts, toys, beads, minerals, and fossils), and The PAST Antiques Market and Museum; Admission fees apply to activities and exhibits such as The Dinosaur Place and Discovery Depot. Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge 1 Old Bridge Road Simsbury, CT Type: Structure, Flowers A 19th century metal truss bridge now used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Groups inspired by the Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls, MA place boxes of flowers on the bridge and have nearby community gardens. Entrance is free, but donations are accepted. Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine 115 Newgate Road East Granby, CT Type: Building, Structure Status: Under Renovation The first State Prison in America; Housed criminals and Revolutionary War prisoners from 1773 to 1827; Was originally used as a copper mine; Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976; Possibly haunted; Closed for restoration until 2014 or 2015 Saville Dam and Barkhamsted Reservoir Saville Dam Road (Route 318) Barkhamsted, CT Type: Other A dam and reservoir on the Farmington River which supplies drinking water to the city of Hartford; There are small parking areas on each side of the dam; People often stop here to enjoy the view Sculpturedale 20 Carter Road (Off of Route 7) Kent, CT Type: Other, Sculptures An outdoor metal sculpture gallery which is the work of Denis Curtiss; The animal sculptures are made of welded steel and allowed to rust; The property is the owner's private residence but visitors are welcome to look; Located near Kent Falls State Park Summer Brook Valley Farm Alpacas 132 Margarite Rd. Extension Middletown, CT Type: Natural Wonder A small farm that grows huacaya alpacas for their fleece/fiber; visitors should call in advance; alpacas are friendly animals and their fleece is softer and stronger than sheep's wool The Dinosaur Place at Nature’s Art Village 1650 Hartford-New London Turnpike (Route 85) Montville, CT Type: Natural Wonder Comprised of 40 life-sized dinosaurs on a 1½ mile outside trail; Also part of the village is Nature's Art Discovery Depot (children's a hands-on indoor activity center), gift shops (selling minerals, fossils, and jewlry), and an antiques market & museum West Cornwall Bridge Sharon-Goshen Turnpike (Route 128, at Lower River Road) Cornwall, CT Type: Covered Bridge One of only two covered bridges in Connecticut still used for vehicular traffic; 172 feet long; crosses the Housatonic River; buiilt in 1864; rebuilt in 1973 Wild Parrots in Connecticut Bridgeport, CT Type: Animals Wild parrots, actually Monk Parakeets from Brazil that escaped from JFK Airport in the 1960s have established colonies in the Bridgeport-Fairfield-Milford area; they are a nuisanse because they build huge nests, are very loud, & compete with native birds |
