I ordered the mahi mahi (Daily Special 3-course meal), but instead of the blackened Cajun style, I got it non-blackened and non-spicy. I substituted french fries instead of the lobster-asparagus risotto and I got a side of asparagus (extra). I got the clam chowder as an appetizer and the vanilla flan as dessert. I wanted a side salad added to my dinner, but I was told there is no side salad (only a regular full-priced salad). I thought this was strange.

I used to eat here now and then when it was called Calamari's. I used to think it was ok, but they had a limited menu. I may have been here once before since it's been called Cal's Wood-Fired Grill & Bar, but I can't remember. As for tonight, it was very crowded, this being Good Friday. I didn't have to wait since I had called ahead for a table. The menu has changed quite a bit since Calamari's and seems much improved. As described above, I customized one of the daily specials to my liking. The clam chowder was good I thought, even though my dinner companion insisted that it was canned. We had to ask the waitress for bread because she totally forgot about it, or maybe you have to request it. Anyways, when it finally arrived it consisted of one roll for each dinner guest. The rolls were fresh, piping hot, and quite good. Somehow my companions got side salads which they requested as a substitute for their cole slaw. The mixed greens looked acceptable. The entrées took a while to arrive (as I mentioned, it was busy tonight). The fish was good, but on the small side. It lacked flavor mostly due to my own preparation request. I thought it might be good with a ginger soy sauce, but I probably need to go to an Asian restaurant for that. Quality-wise it was a good piece of fish. The french fries were good, fairly thin and crispy. The grilled, slightly blackened asparagus was thick and pretty good, though it could have cooked another minute or two. The vanilla flan was good. Our waitress was ok, but she kept forgetting things and mixing them up. Maybe she was tired. There's not too many seafood restaurants in the area, so at least I know I can get a descent meal here. My restaurant verdict: better than average.
