Middletown is the town in the middle of Aquidneck Island, between Newport and Portsmouth. It's not usually a destination in itself, but is a good place to find a hotel if you plan to visit Newport. Whereas Newport is for the rich and famous and is characterized by a lively waterfront, historic buildings, and a downtown area popular for walking and shopping at boutique shops; In contrast, Middletown looks more like a modern New England town with strip malls, chain hotels, and a Walmart. You'll see most people driving an automobile here rather than walking.

Not all of Middletown is commercialized. The west side of Middletown is home to the U.S. Naval Complex, Naval Academy, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. The southeastern end of Middletown contains Second Beach, Third Beach, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, Norman Bird Sanctuary, and Paradise Valley Park. The northern part of Middletown still retains some its original rural farmland. This can be seen at Prescott Farm, which is free to the public and features an early 19th century Windmill.
